PETER GOSLING was a college lecturer until he took early retirement and since then has been a jobbing writer having written a large number of books for such publishers as Macmillan, McGraw Hill and Pitman. He then turned to writing for a range of magazines: airline magazines and magazines devoted to his special interest, aviation. This is the first book he has taken on for several years and has enjoyed the challenge. It all came about because twenty years ago his daughter, Jo Parfitt, got married and went to live in Dubai, miles away from where he and his wife lived in the middle of England. They were saddened of course, but recognised it was a great opportunity for her and for them to have some exotic holidays. Four years later their brst grandchild, Sam, was born and their ambivalence towards Jo's expatriation became tougher than ever. How would he and his wife Jenny cope with having a grandchild so far away? How could they see him grow up? Would he form that special bond with them from which grandparents derive such pleasure?
ANNE HUSCROFT and her husband Chris, left Sale in England when their only son, James, was 4½ years old for Bremen in Germany for 2½ years. Anne has provided relocation assistance to expat executives and their families for many years during her early career with a large multinational organisation, never dreaming that she would eventually experience the expat life with her own family.
While in Bremen she helped other new expats integrate into their new surroundings, providing practical solutions to the challenges of adapting to living overseas whilst maintaining links with family and friends back home. After a brief period back in the UK they moved to Voorschoten, Netherlands before repatriating permanently (they think) in summer 2007. During this time Anne has invested a huge amount of time and effort into ensuring that James stays close to his grandparents and that they stay involved in his life. Anne and her family feel she has succeeded, whilst James enjoys and benefits from a close relationship with his grandparents. Anne now runs an independent company, REO Solutions Limited, that provides flexible, professional and personal out-sourced relocation management services, teaches English as a Foreign Language and provides organisation solutions to integrate newcomers quickly into life in the UK.
